Mission / Vision
Women Empowering Girls (WEG) is a non-profit faith based organization that focus on empowering young girls through mentorship, empowerment, and education, by connecting them with professional women. Our mission at WEG is to empower young girls, to obtain their goals and overcome life’s challenges, so they can reach their full potential with confidence.
We've launched our first WEG all girls Summer Retreat in 2016. Each year 50 girls ages 10-18 come together for a three-day sleep over camp-style retreat. They participate in activities, such as; workshops centered on goal-setting, health, education, self-esteem, financial literacy, and sisterhood. All workshops are lead by professional women. Our aim at the end of each retreat; the girls return home with a new sense of direction and a positive attitude towards life.
Hello, I am Sylvia Cruz, founder of Women Empowering Girls. Since childhood, I wanted to become a nurse. However, the road to achieving my goals has not been the easiest. I came from a single parent home. My 10 siblings and I were educationally and financially disadvantaged. I became pregnant at the age of 15 and then dropped out of High School soon after. I had no goals and no direction. I became a born-again Christian and my life began to turn around for the better.
In my thirties I went back to school and completed my degree as a Registered Nurse (RN). I am proud that I eventually achieved my childhood dreams of becoming a RN. However, I realized that my journey would have benefited greatly from having inspirational women in my life. I believe that the power of mentorship and community is invaluable. That’s how the birth of “Women Empowering Girls” came to life.
